Today, I’m thankful that I had a spare phone. My Droid Razr Maxx’s operating system finally came to a screeching halt today. But I happened to have one spare phone I was saving because I knew this was about to happen. If it lasts a while, I won’t have to buy a new phone. Come on Droid Razr M, hang in there for me!

Day 51: September 29, 2013 – the grill
Tonight I’m thankful that I’m dating a woman who owns a grill. After a day of hard work, which followed a day of fun, we enjoyed a yummy dinner of swordfish, rice, and zucchini.
Day 50: September 28, 2013 – the final WaterFire Columbus
Today, with sadness, I am thankful that I got to see the final WaterFire Columbus. The city of Columbus has decided to remove a dam in the Scioto River to restore the natural flow to the river in the downtown area, which will have the side effect of lowering the river level. This means the river will shrink from 600 feet wide to only 300 feet wide.
Good news? There will be over 100 extra feet of riverbank park area on each side of the river beginning in 2016 when the construction ends.
Bad news? The Santa Maria replica must shut down for the duration, and the fire pits for WaterFire Columbus (which cost donors $30,000 to install) must be removed. New ones would have to float, as the river level will fluctuate when the dam is removed, so they would be much more expensive to replace. So, WaterFire is no more.
But tonight, my date and her son got to enjoy the music of the group The British Invasion with me.
The coolest thing about WaterFire Columbus is that it was a free event. Including the boat ride beneath the downtown skyline. How many places can you go and see a free concert by a really good group, several times each summer, with many different types of music represented, and also watch the fires burn out in the river? If you’ve ever gone to a bonfire, just imagine three dozen fires burning out in the river. Super cool, and relaxing.
Tonight, I’m thankful that I was able to see a few of these over the last few years, and that I got to enjoy the last one with two wonderful people.
Day 49: September 27, 2013 – IHOP has cheap, good fish dinners?
Today I was thankful to find out that IHOP has cheap (and good!) fish dinners. Who knew?
Day 48: September 26, 2013 – good news
I am thankful for the letter that confirmed the dermatologist’s preliminary findings (otherwise known as an educated guess…). The biopsy says no skin cancer.
Day 47: September 25, 2013 – misunderstandings
I can’t repeat what was said, but a double entendre was uttered in my presence today that would have made Johnny Carson proud. And I laughed until tears came. I am thankful for that laugh…
Day 46: September 24, 2013 – pulled pork
Tonight, I’m thankful for the lovely dinner that was cooked for me. A nice evening indeed.
Day 45: September 23, 2013 – exploring the neighborhood
Today I’m thankful for Vince taking me on a little trip through the neighborhood. I didn’t realize that just a short trip down the street is a YMCA and one of Vince’s favorite restaurants. The Y has a 1/17 mile track… I know, that’s a weird measurement, isn’t it? … and I walked one and 12/17 miles while he jogged. Then we went and had fish and shrimp for dinner and a nice long talk. Always good to catch up with your friends.
Day 44: September 22, 2013 – ibuprofen and unicycles
Today I’m thankful for two things… ibuprofen and unicycles. If you read yesterday’s blog, you’ll know why I’m thankful for (and filled up with) ibuprofen. Reminds me of Animal House… yo ga, yo ga, yo ga!
And I’m thankful for the guy who performed for us downtown at the second part of the photo shoot today. You rarely see someone riding a unicycle. Too tired to post photos tonight… ZZZzzz…….
Day 43: September 21, 2013 – giving something back
Today, I’m thankful for the chance to help give back to a group of kids who I will never meet. I did 58 sun salutations yesterday in Whetstone Park to help raise money for and awareness of Yoga Gangsters, an organization that helps at-risk youth by teaching them yoga techniques to help them manage stress. Candy runs the Columbus chapter of this wonderful organization that her sister founded in Miami several years ago. I forget the exact amount that Candy raised… I’m still amazed that she could add the numbers so quickly in her head last night… she did 108 sun salutations and had to be much more tired than I was…. but the total was almost $1200! BY HERSELF! But several of us were there to support her, including Liz who did all 108 with her. We had a great time in spite of the lack of sun, presence of rain, and declining temperature… I’m also thankful for Beth, who let me wear one of her jackets while I was keeping the count and shooting the first photos. It felt great to be a part of something that will help our community and some of the overlooked kids who live here.
